Pine Bluff Superintendent May Close Schools

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Pine Bluff superintendent says his school district needs to consider eliminating a couple of schools next year. Superintendent Frank Anthony and the school board have come up with four possibilities for dropping schools or consolidating grades. The first model would reduce the districts six elementary schools and five magnet elementary schools to five kindergarten-through-fourth-grade schools, two middle schools, one junior high and one high school. The second model would have one elementary school with seven grades in addition to a junior high school and a four-grade high school. Other school officials suggest returning to the districts neighborhood school model. The district now has three elementary schools with fewer than 200 students, and most of the buildings are more than 50 years old. Closing one school could save the district $100,000.
