ASU Rearranges Things To Meet Budget

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Arkansas State University is rearranging some course schedules and faculty assignments just two weeks before the fall semester. The university is citing an excess of off-budget requests -- unused funds used to pay for requests that arent budgeted. Vice chancellor for research and academic affairs Susan Allen says this year ASU has more requests for that money than usual. For example, instead of hiring its usual 20 tenure-track faculty, this year ASU had to hire about 30. Some faculty members criticize the administration, saying they have mismanaged money and didnt pay attention to how much was available for new hires. Estimates for the shortfall have been as high as $1.2 million and as low as 450-thousand dollars.
