A grant of $812,000 will help the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences track the body-fat measurements of every school-age child in the state. The research, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will be used to help Arkansas government officials implement a new state law aimed at reducing childhood obesity. The 2003 legislation set a national precedent by requiring schools to measure students body-mass index every year and report results to parents.
