Special Session Enters Third Week

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The third week at the Capitol for lawmakers trying to fix the states public school system will be a short one. Meetings are only scheduled for Monday. Tuesday and Friday this week because of Christmas. But, there are rumors that some meetings may be called on Saturday. Thats because lawmakers are under a January first deadline to make the states public school system constitutional. Today as expected, lawmakers passed a major reform bill out of the House. The Weaver-Miller plan is anti-consolidation and would only close schools based on their ability to meet curriculum and efficiency standards. The major school reform plan backed by the governor which passed out of the Senate on Friday was supposed to be up for debate in the House today. Its expected to get a chilly reception. Senate sponsor Jim Argue says he wants to spend more time answering representatives questions privately before he brings it before the House education committee.
