Mixed Messages?

High school counselors spend years telling students their good study skills and good grades matter. Some feel a policy under consideration by the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville may fly in the face of their hard work. U of A may soon decide to join 8 schools in the Southeastern Conference that already allow "Ds" to count as transferable credit from junior colleges. Right now students have to earn a "C" or better in a course for it to count at U of A. Coaches feel a loosening of the grade standards could help with recruiting. Mary Taylor, head counselor at North Little Rock H.S. West, tells her students athletics never come before academics. Despite that, she isnt opposed to U of As potential new policy. She says theres no way you would make it at Fayetteville as a "D" student, but an otherwise good student deserves a second chance to do well at their school of choice. She also says that sometimes getting to play a sport can motivate a student to work harder in the classroom. U of As board of trustees will discuss the "D" rule on the 14th.
