Updated: March 6, 2012
Services will be held later this week for the man who died Sunday while running in the half marathon portion of the Little Rock Marathon.

Mike Kelly, 38, of Little Rock, collapsed at mile 11, around 11:30 Sunday morning. He died after being taken to UAMS.

Today, UALR released details about Kelly and his funeral services.

He worked as a network technician in UALR's Information Technology Services Department.

Kelly joined UALR as a lab assistant in the student library lab while pursuing a bachelor's degree. He was hired full-time in the Desktop Support Group in 2007. Kelly was promoted to his current position in 2009 where he was responsible for maintaining the university network. He also was working on his master's degree in information quality.

"Mike was a conscientious, dedicated person who did a great job at whatever task he was assigned," said Dr. Jeannie Winston, vice chancellor for information services. "He was a valuable member of our UALR family and will be missed."

Kelly is survived by his wife, Ebony Kelly, an administrative assistant in the Department of Information Science.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Court, Little Rock, with the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mosaic Church of Little Rock, 6420 Colonel Glenn Rd.

Kelly's death is the second in the history of the Little Rock Marathon. Back in 2008, 27-year-old Adam Nickel, of Wisconsin, a fairly experienced marathoner, collapsed into the arms of medical staff seconds after crossing the finish with a time of 3:03:07. Weeks later, his death was attributed to electrolyte abnormalities, possibly brought on by dehydration, which led to muscle tissue breakdown and cardiac arrhythmia.
