DECATUR, Ala. (UA Sports Information) - Arkansas sophomore-to-be Scotty Campbell fired a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the Spirit of America Golf Classic at the Burning Tree Country Club. Campbell held off LSUs Chris Wells down the stretch for the tournament win with a four-round total of 12-under-par 272. Wells finished a shot back at 11-under-par 273. Florida Southerns Greg Koch finished third with a 9-under-par 275. The win came down to Sundays 15th hole for the Conway, Ark., native, who stuck his approach shot to within five feet and tapped in for birdie. Wells countered by dunking his approach into the bunker and then blasting our over the green before chipping to within four feet and two-putting for a double bogey. The three-shot swing gave Campbell a two-shot lead heading into the tournaments final three holes. He would finish his round with pars, while Wells missed a birdie putt on No. 17 before recording a birdie on the 18th hole to finish one stroke back. Wells took a three-shot lead over Campbell earlier in the round by tapping in for birdie on No. 6 after a one hour and 40 minute rain delay. After Wells gave a stroke back with a bogey on No. 8, Campbell responded with birdies on the first two holes of the back nine to draw even. Campbell fired an opening round 65 (6-under par) on Thursday, which was one shot back of Wells at the end of the first day. He then posted rounds of 70 (1-under par) in Fridays second round and Saturdays third round. Campbell entered the final round on shot back of Wells at 8-under par. Earlier this summer Razorback sophomore to be, Buddy Wilkins won the Paradise Valley Invitational in Fayetteville.
