Nick Schmidt Honored by Baseball America

UA Sports Information: FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas lefty Nick Schmidt was named a second-team freshman All-America by Baseball America Wednesday afternoon. The High Ridge, Mo. native, posted an 8-2 record as a freshman with a 2.80 ERA in 99.2 innings. Schmidt was the Razorbacks Friday night ace in 2005, starting a UA freshman record 17 games. Schmidt struck out 89, threw two complete games and held opponents to a team-low .235 batting average, while allowing just 14 extra-base hits all season. Schmidts freshman season produced wins against national powers like Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. Schmidt was named to the SEC All-Freshman team that was picked by league coaches, and SEbaseball.com also named him the SEC Freshman of the Year. Rices two-way standout Joe Savery was the 2005 Baseball America Freshman of the Year. The 19-year-old lefthander/first baseman was named the Western Athletic Conferencešs player of the year after leading the conference with a .382 batting average at the plate and 129 strikeouts on the mound.
