FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Fayetteville) - Razorback track and field athletes Jaanus Uudmae and Matt Gunn were named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Mens University Division Track & Field/Cross Country Team. Uudmae, a native of Tallin, Estonia was the only athlete from the Southeastern Conference to garner first-team accolades, while Gunn earned third team honors. Forty-six student-athletes from 37 different NCAA Division I institutions were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Arkansas was the only league school and one of seven in the nation to gain two selections. A three-time All-American and seven-time All-SEC performer, Uudmae graduated in the spring as a computer science major and is one of six track athletes in the nation to boast a 4.0 GPA. In 2005 he won the triple jump at the SEC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, becoming the first Razorback athlete since two-time Olympian Robert Howard in 1997 to claim both indoor and outdoor triple jump crowns in the same year. Uudmae was named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year earlier this week and he is also a member of the All-SEC and Lon Farrell Academic Honor Rolls. Gunn graduated this spring with an international relations and European studies double major, while maintaining a 3.83 GPA. The Idaho Falls, Idaho native was the undergraduate chair of the International Law Society at the University of Arkansas and will attend Columbias Law School in the fall. In April he was awarded with one of the NCAAs highest honors, the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship. Gunn served as Arkansas fifth man at the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships and was a four-time All-SEC performer. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least half their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school.
