Police officers in Benton spend last Friday gathering up illegally posted signs around the city.
In that one day, they collected 117 signs that ranged from "For Sale" signs to "Yard Sale" signs, to help wanted signs.
Benton Code Enforcement officers say the problem with illegally posted signs was getting out of control. The officers say linemen were having a hard time climbing up utility poles to make repairs and drivers couldn`t see other cars in the intersections because of the signs.
According to an ordinance that`s been in place for three years, a sign has to be posted at least 10 feet away from the road, can`t be on a utility pole, and can`t be on public property.
No one was given a ticket during Friday`s round-up, but code enforcement officers say they`ll start writing citations to repeat offenders.
The punishment for illegally posting a sign in Benton is a $25 to $100 fine.
