State Health Department Will Talk About Also Pulling Pseudo-Ephedrine Liquid Gelcaps Off Shelves

Updated: January 7, 2009
The state Health Department will try to determine whether all forms of cold medicine containing the ingredient pseudo-ephedrine should be locked up behind store counters. Under a new Arkansas law, tablets containing the ingredient must be taken off drugstore shelves, because pseudo-ephedrine is a key ingredient in methamphetamine. The new law does not include liquid "gelcaps," because lawmakers believed those pills are not useful to meth-makers. But Governor Huckabee has asked the Health Department to study the issue, to determine whether those pills should also be restricted. A public hearing on the issue is set for June.
