Cell phone towers could fund local schools

The North Little Rock school district might get a boost from a new cell phone company in town. Verizon Wireless is talking with the district to build a cell phone tower at the Ridge Road Middle School next to the football field. The tower would be 48 to 72 feet tall and look like a light pole. It could generate almost half a million dollars for the district over the next 15 to 20 years. The school board has given Verizon Wireless permission to test the site to see if it`s a good place for a tower. If so, the board would still have to give permission before construction started. Also, the city would have to approve of a cell phone tower being built in a residential area, which currently is not allowed. Verizon has also approached the Little Rock School District with a similar proposal, but so far, the board hasn`t taken any action on it.
