PB Alderman Removed From Office

One day after being sentenced to three years in prison for attempted extortion, a Jefferson County judge ordered Pine Bluff Alderman Jack Foster removed from office. Judge Bill Benton said the state met its burden of proof after reviewing Fosters conviction and sentencing documents. Prosecutors used a recently-enacted law, which prohibits convicted felons from holding office, to oust Foster from his 1st Ward Alderman position. Defense Attorney Luther Sutter argued that he didn`t have enough time to adequate review his case, repeatedly asking for a dismissal and a recess. He also asked Benton to recuse himself, citing an association with some of the principles in Fosters federal trial. Benton repeatedly denied all requests. Sutter declined to say whether Foster will appeal Benton`s ruling, but did say his client will continue to fight his prison sentence handed down by Federal Judge James Moody on Thursday. Foster remains free on appeal. Pine Bluff will hold a special election to fill the vacancy on the city council.
