Bill Defining Marriage Between A Man And A Woman Sent Back To Committee

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A bill that would require Arkansas textbooks to define marriage as between one man and one woman has been referred back to the House Education Committee. Lawmakers in the House of Representatives debated HB1136 for about 45 minutes before voting 49-44 to send it back. Concerns centered around academic freedom and the potential cost of purchasing books. Under the bill, any new textbooks that include definitions of marriage must define it as between a man and a woman and shall not include definitions that are contrary to the state constitution.
