Governor Names New Insurance Commissioner

Governor Huckabee has named Julie Benafield Bowman as state insurance commissioner, replacing Mike Pickens whose term expired. The 41-year-old Bowman, a Little Rock resident, had served as chief of the state Workers` Compensation Commission, starting in May 1998. Before that appointment, she was general counsel for the Arkansas Development Finance Authority, starting in 1996. She was attorney supervisor for the workers` compensation fraud investigation unit of the state Insurance Department from 1993-1996.
