Choose Life License Plates May Be Gone Soon

The state attorney general`s office says he
expects a federal judge to put a halt to the state`s issue of
"Choose Life" license plates.
Cliff Hoofman, the legislative-affairs specialist for Attorney
General Mike Beebe, told legislators that a lawsuit challenging the
license plate design will probably lead to all 94 of Arkansas`
specialty plates being made invalid.
Tamara Brackett of Fayetteville filed suit against the state
last year on grounds that she could not buy a plate that advocates
her stance in favor of legal abortion. She says the state opened
the license plate forum to one viewpoint alone -- the view of
anti-abortion groups. Her lawyer has said the suit has to attack
the law that allows all specialty plates.
Many organizations raise money through the specialty plates and
want the program to continue. Officials are exploring ways to
change the system so it can go on.
