There are genetic tests available, yet many people fear the results and what might come with it.
Dr. Kent McKelvey, the Director of Cancer Genetics Services at UAMS, explains, "What we don`t want is for people not to get a genetic test because they`re afraid. Fear should not play a role in a major test that could save your life."
Dr. McKelvey said there are 35 known cancer syndromes that you can test for, using genetics.
If you are interested in learning more about genetic testing, you can call UAMS. Dr. Kent McKelvey, Jr. is Director of Cancer Genetics Services at UAMS. You can reach his office at 296-1501, ext. 1005. Be sure to ask about seeing a genetic counselor.
