Shoppers Are Out Early

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Days before the traditional Friday-after-Thanksgiving start of the holiday shopping season, shoppers were out snapping up bargains when, in the past, they`d be preparing turkey and stuffing. Susan Burnett of Bald Knob drove more than an hour to get to Little Rock just to visit the mall. Burnett said she decided to start shopping earlier this year, which meant she`s already more than halfway finished. Chris Eakin, co-owner of Indigo, a dress shop at Park Plaza, said he also noticed that more shoppers were out earlier. Business professor Tom Jensen of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville said the percentage of annual sales held by December has decreased, but that overall spending hasn`t gone down. He says it`s just been redistributed to November and January.
