Legislators Get Look At What It`s Going To Take To Repair Schools

Legislators got a preliminary look today at a
report on the conditions of school buildings in Arkansas -- an
issue that is expected to be at the forefront when the General
assembly convenes in January.
Teams of construction experts have assessed the conditions of
each of Arkansas` 6,600 school buildings. The Arkansas Supreme
Court included facilities in its order that the state improve
public schools.
To make needed improvements, state Senator Shane Broadway told
legislators that the state must agree on a set of standards that
school buildings should meet. Then, the state can go ahead with
improvements.
But the work can occur only when money is in place. Voters
turned away a measure that would have increased the state property
tax to raise 90 million dollars for school facilities.
