Former Lake View District sues over consolidation

The former Lake View School District has filed a lawsuit that says the district should be spared from consolidation that has already taken place among school district. A plan approved by the Legislature consolidated Arkansas schools with fewer than 350 students. Lake View was too small to be kept intact under the plan, which consolidated 57 districts.
The Lake View District successfully challenged Arkansas` public school funding system. Residents of the area filed a federal lawsuit Monday asking a judge to undo the school`s demise. The lawsuit contends a state law that led to the mostly black district`s consolidation was racially discriminatory and violated civil rights, equal protection and due process provisions of the Constitution.
The suit seeks a temporary restraining order to block implementation of consolidation.
