Plans were unveiled today to move the
Arkansas Travelers from one of the oldest ballparks in professional
baseball to a new riverfront park in North Little Rock.
Construction could begin as soon as next spring and the first
game could be played as early as late 2006 or the start of the 2007
season. Much of the timing depends on lining up financing for the
25 (m) million-dollar stadium.
North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Hays says he hopes the stadium
can pay for itself through skybox rentals, premium seating and
advertising.
Seven acres for the park, located across the Arkansas River from
downtown Little Rock, was donated by Little Rock financier Warren
Stephens. Wednesday`s announcement included plans for a mixed-use
development in another adjacent 15 acres.
The Travelers now play in Ray Winder Field in the central city
section of Little Rock -- where the team has been since 1932.
The Travelers organization says Ray Winder is one of the five
oldest stadiums still in use. Travelers general manager Bill
Valentine says Ray Winder will not be abandoned. He says he is
exploring the possibility of turning it into a multi-sport venue to
host baseball, soccer and track.
