Searcy Police Find Phony Night Deposit Box

Updated: January 7, 2009
Searcy police confiscated an elaborate but phony night deposit box at a local bank. Investigators say the people behind the scam may be the same suspects who placed similar boxes in other cities in Arkansas and in other states. The difference this time is that police got to the box before the thieves could take it away. And police say the culprits left behind their fingerprints. Since July, bank customers have been stolen from by thieves who placed fake boxes in Fort Smith and Eureka Springs. Police said similar scams have popped up in three other states, too. Police in Searcy were called Monday night by a woman who works at a fast-food restaurant. She called authorities when the structure holding the bank box didn`t appear to be attached to the bank. Police say the culprits built a large wooden box and covered it with stucco. They painted it so it would match the design of the bank. Searcy police say the thieves didn`t get away with money Monday night, but they are sharing their evidence with communities where the thieves had better luck.
