Widow Of Fallen Soldier Receives Three Medals

The widow of an Arkansas soldier killed in Iraq received three medals at the funeral of Army National Guard Sergeant Russell Lee Collier. The 48-year-old Collier was a medic, and lived in Harrison. He was killed October third when he ran to aid a soldier who was wounded and later died. Collier had left his rifle behind in exchange for his medical bag, but he was hit by small arms fire just as he got to Potts. Collier had served 18 years in the Army, Navy and National Guard. Collier was remembered at a memorial service yesterday at Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Harrison The medals were presented during the ceremony. Collier was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service medal and a Purple Heart and an Arkansas Distinguished Service medal. Local banks are taking donations for a college scholarship fund for Collier`s nine-year-old son, Hunter.
