Democratic Congressman Vic Snyder was the only member of the Arkansas delegation in the House to vote Thursday against a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
The 227 to 186 roll call vote fell 49 votes short of passing the proposal.
The three others in Arkansas`s House delegation who voted for
the measure were Democrats Marion Berry and Mike Ross and Republican John Boozman.
Snyder has said he personally was opposed to gay marriages but also was against constitutional bans. He says a message of intolerance could harm Arkansas economically in its quest to
attract business and industry.
Boozman said after the vote that the ban is needed to protect
traditional marriage.
