breaking news
4th grader William Issac Brian was only a student at Salem Elementary for a little over a week. He transferred in from another school district.
Around 4 Tuesday afternoon he got off the school bus at the intersection of Valley Forge and North Shore in Benton. He crossed the street and almost made it to the curb when a Jeep Grand Cherokee coming from the opposite direction hit him. The district says there are about 20 students still on the bus ranging from grades elementary to high school who could have seen the accident.
(Richard Abernathy/Bryant Superintendent)"it depends on how much they saw what their parents do with them tonight. if they talk about it etc. what their beliefs are will greatly impact how they deal with it."
(Sgt. Lisa Wylie/Benton Police Department)
"when a vehicle coming the opposite direction apparently didn`t see him or just disregarded the school bus safely warning device and ran over the child."
Police say there`s no word yet whether the driver of that car will face any charges. They plan to consult with the prosecuting attorney. The driver was taken to the police department for blood alcohol testing and questioning. Meanwhile the school district says of course grief counseling will be available tomororw. They plan to review their bus route and transportation policies in case there is anything they can change for the future to prevent anything like this from happeneing in the future. Although in a case like this there may not be.
