Civil Rights Tour Collecting Stories From Arkansans

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Efforts to compile the civil rights stories of Arkansans are under way in downtown Little Rock today. The Voice of Civil Rights Tour, sponsored by the AARP, uses volunteers to record the stories of those who lived through the civil rights movement. The organization hopes to collect hundreds of Arkansas stories this weekend to add to stories it has already collected in 21 other states. People who shared their stories this morning focused on the Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis and recalled crowds of hate filled residents who worked to bar black children from attending the school. The protest eventually led to some schools being closed down for a year. Today is the 47th anniversary of the main showdown at the school.
