Arkansas State University plans the grand opening of its 20-million dollar Biosciences Institute Saturday. Money from Arkansas` settlement with tobacco companies paid for the center, which will research beneficial uses of
compounds extracted from tobacco plants. Center director Carole Cramer says the institute can become a leader in research involving transgenic plants, vaccines and plants as factories for new medicines. One of the center`s project is to attempt to develop a vaccine for dysentery. The center will also look at new proteins
for drugs to treat inflammation and cancer.
