Small Earthquake In Maynard

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A small earthquake was recorded late last night near the northeast Arkansas town of Maynard. The US Cooperative Sismic Network and the US Geological Survey registered the quake at 2.5 on the Richter scale at about 11:31 PM local time. The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale, meaning each whole number is a power of ten higher than the previous. Anything from One to Three is minor and can`t even be felt, but the difference between a three and a four reading is significant, and the jump from five to six can mean widespread damage. The seismic movement in Maynard was recorded at a depth of 1.4 kilometers, or close to a mile below the surface, but the reading of less than three meant little or nothing was felt on the surface.
