Poinsett County Voters Reject Tax For Jail

A proposed one percent sales tax that
would have paid for running the Poinsett County Jail, a
911 emergency phone system and the county`s landfill has
been rejected by nearly a two-to-one margin.
Of those who voted on Tuesday, one thousand and sixty cast
ballots against the proposed tax, while 535 were cast in favor.
Poinsett County Judge Doyle Hillis, the county`s top elected
administrator, said an increase in property taxes may now be
considered. He said the county has to do something because it can`t
continue to operate and keep losing money.
