In the middle of a week that has already seen five Arkansans die in boating accidents, the Army Corps of Engineers is urging the state to be safe during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend. The corps is in charge of many of the state`s recreational waterways. They say this weekend will be one of the busiest of the year. They also offered safety tips, saying Arkansans shouldn`t --drink alcohol if they plan to be in the water or piloting a boat. --Rely on toys to stay afloat. --Overestimate their swimming skills. --swim alone or dive into lakes or rivers. And Arkansans should: --Only swim in designated areas. --Watch children at all times. --Wear a life jacket. --Check the weather forecast. --File a float plan with a friend. --Check boats for required safety equipment. --Carry a map while on waterways.
