Jonesboro Plant Needs To Expand

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Frito-Lay plant at Jonesboro is making moves toward expanding. The company is working up a plan to issue a new series of revenue bonds to cover an expansion and introduce a new snack food line later this year. The company said it is adding a new tortilla chip line at the plant. The new product is expected to be announced in early December. Company officials would not describe the chip in detail, for competitive reasons. The company is waiting for the Jonesboro City Council to approve the bonds. The council is to consider the bonds at a meeting next Tuesday. Payment on the bonds will be contingent on Frito-Lay making lease payments to the city. Plant manager Boyce Sherrill said the Frito-Lay plant now employs 575 people. The plant opened in 1998 at a 140-acre site, and makes corn chips and potato chips. Sherrill said the plant produced 91 million pounds of chips last year.
