Arkansas Fisherman Drowns In White River

Updated: January 7, 2009
A fisherman drowned this afternoon when he slipped on the rocks in the White River and the current whisked him to where searchers found him floating near a water treatment plant. Police said 66 year old Richard Cowdrey of Leslie was fishing for trout in the Miller Trout Dock area below Cotter Spring when the accident occurred. Cowdrey`s wife, Mary, said she sat on the river bank and watched as her husband waded out into the river and slipped on the rocks. Mary Cowdrey said she shouted "Are you O-K?" but didn`t get a response. She said she thought Cowdrey was trying to take off his waders so he could get out of the water more easily, but then the current caught him, she said. The woman said she watched as her husband washed down the river, going under and coming back up and going under again. She said she screamed for help and someone called emergency workers. A search began by land and water and two Baxter County Sheriff`s Department officials found Cowdrey floating in the water at a water treatment plant.
