Governor Huckabee And Ethics Commission Agree On Violation

Updated: January 7, 2009
Governor Huckabee and the state Ethics Commission have agreed to accept a 2003 court ruling that found Huckabee made a minor violation of campaign finance laws. But the agreement does not include the commission`s original ruling that Huckabee was wrong to have accepted a canoe as a gift. Huckabee had challenged the commission`s January 2003 ruling that he had failed to report a $200 stadium blanket he received as a gift and that he should pay a $250 for accepting the canoe gift. A judge rejected the fine for the canoe, but Huckabee challenged the rest of the ruling to the state Supreme Court. That case was still pending today when the Ethics Commission voted at its regularly scheduled meeting to accept an agreement with the governor`s office that would allow the circuit court ruling to stand. Graham Sloan, the commission`s director who was named in the governor`s appeal, said the issue was minor.
