A judge in Crittenden County today
conducted a bond hearing today for a woman charged with kidnapping
a young girl at Gilmore. The judge ordered that Jo Ann Buchanan
continue to be held on a one million dollar bond.
Buchanan is charged with the kidnapping of Patricia Miles, who
has been missing since Sunday morning. Searchers today used a helicopter and had boats on standby for their search, and are also out on foot. Officials won`t say why they were prepared to use
various methods of searching for the girl.
The girl`s mother, who is also named Patricia Miles, met with police today and said later that officers told her not to become too hopeful.
At today`s court hearing, Buchanan said she was on several prescription drugs, including one for depression and another to help her sleep. Family members say they are "dumbfounded" by the charges and that the woman is innocent.
Police say Buchanan has not cooperated with them. Buchanan was to have entered a plea today, but her arraignment was delayed pending the arrangment of legal counsel
Since the girl disappeared Sunday, various police agencies have given the child`s age as either six or seven.
