ASU Rearranges Things To Meet Budget

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Arkansas State University is rearranging some course schedules and faculty assignments just two weeks before the fall semester. The university is citing an excess of off-budget requests -- unused funds used to pay for requests that aren`t budgeted. Vice chancellor for research and academic affairs Susan Allen says this year ASU has more requests for that money than usual. For example, instead of hiring its usual 20 tenure-track faculty, this year ASU had to hire about 30. Some faculty members criticize the administration, saying they have mismanaged money and didn`t pay attention to how much was available for new hires. Estimates for the shortfall have been as high as $1.2 million and as low as $450,000.
