TIME AND COST ADDING UP FOR RENOVATION PROJECT AT CAPITOL

Updated: January 7, 2009
CREWS ARE RESTORING THE GROUNDS OF THE STATE CAPITOL TO THE WAY IT WAS WHEN IT WAS COMPLETED IN 1915. "This is the people`s building and people`s yard and we like to do what we can in the way of preservation because it`s a testimony to the state of Arkansas." THAT INCLUDES RESTORING THE FRONT STEPS CLEANING UP THREE STATUES AND RESTORING THE PROMENADE AREA. ATTENTION TO DETAIL HAS COST MONEY AND TIME. CREWS GOT A LATE START, AND THE ORIGINAL GRANT OF JUST OVER 769 THOUSAND DOLLARS WASN`T ENOUGH- SO OFFICIALS RECEIVED ANOTHER 560 THOUSAND DOLLARS THIS YEAR FOR A TOTAL OF 1.2 MILLION DOLLARS. THE GRANT COMES FROM THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCES COUNCIL. "They felt it was a worthwhile project." EVEN ENOUGHT TO GRANT THE ADDITIONAL FUNDS. MONEY IS GENERATED THROUGH REAL ESTATE TRANSFER TAXES. "They felt the state capitol was important historic site sto they wanted to finish it in the proper manner." OFFICIALS SAY THIS MONEY WILL FINISH UP THE JOB. "We`re only going to get one shot at this so we need to get it right the first time."
