Arkansas Bucks Housing Trend

Updated: January 7, 2009
While economists are dismayed about national trends showing housing starts down and thus the nation`s financial health, in Arkansas, something`s different. Contractors here say there`s no lack of work. They almost can`t build fast enough to keep up with demand. "I think people are still interested in the American dream," says contractor Toby Parker. Realtors say in the natural state buyers can still get a lot for their money so they`re eager to invest. According to the Arkansas homebuilder`s association, 100 more homes have been built in the greater little rock area during the first 6 months of the year than during the same time in 2003. Nationally, housing starts for the month of June were down an unexpected eight point five percent. Single-family construction was the weakness according to the Commerce Department.
