Arkansas Supreme Court Suspends Judge

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Arkansas Supreme Court has barred Jefferson County Circuit Judge Fred A. Davis the Third from hearing civil cases while criminal charges are pending against him. Davis of White Hall, was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Garland County on June tenth. He also was charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and unlawful use of a dealer tag. All the charges are misdemeanors. The high court ruled that Davis should be suspended with pay until the charges are settled. There was one dissent. The Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission had asked the court to suspend Davis. The panel says it appeared the judge had committed a felony by violating a state law barring the willful evasion of state sales taxes. A special prosecutor has been appointed to determine whether felony charges are warranted.
