The owner of a plant that exploded and burned in
January faces $20,500 in penalties levied by the
federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The Detco Industries Incorporated plant made industrial
chemicals and aerosol products, such as cleaners and disinfectants.
On January sixth, the plant exploded and caught fire. Residents
and businesses around the plant were evacuated and two Detco
workers were injured. Detco officials said a valve leaking propane
gas apparently was the ignition point for the fire.
Violations alleged by OSHA range included improper training of
employees who work around hazardous chemicals, failure to mark
exits or establish fire-prevention and evacuation plans and other
offenses.
The company, which didn`t return calls for comment, has until
July 19th to contest the violations.
