Needed Water Found In Coal Mines

A projected water crisis in Greenwood could be solved by drawing water from two abandoned coal mines. The Greenwood City Council plans to consider the plan, created by three University of Arkansas students, later this year after a public meeting on the project.
Thomas Cuthbert is the chairman of the Greenwood water advisory committee, which gave a favorable review to the proposal. Cuthbert said the city will likely need a new water source by 2013 because of population growth. The proposal calls for the city to draw drinking water from mines that flooded in 1928 and have been abandoned since then. The mine water, full of iron and sulfates, would be filtered naturally through a 12-acre wetland in the middle of town.
