Defenders of legislative term limits
announced a campaign today to counter a Legislature-proposed
amendment to give state lawmakers more time in office.
Proposed Amendment One would double the time House members can
serve to six two-year terms and allow state senators to serve three
four-year terms instead of the current two terms. The proposed
amendment will be on the November general election ballot.
Save Term Limits organizer Karl Kimball called the amendment an
attempt to thwart the will of the people. Amendment 73, passed by
voters in 1992, limited House members to three two-year terms and
senators to two four-year terms.
Save Term Limits spokesman Tim Jacob said the group`s
fund-raising efforts would be aimed primarily at running television
ads.
Defenders say term limits made room in the Legislature for fresh
ideas by dismantling the seniority system and ridding the body of
entrenched power brokers.
A coalition of business groups, labor, trial lawyers, local
government organizations and others is supporting the proposal to
extend term limits.
