A former funeral home director pleaded guilty
today to multiple counts of mail and bank fraud.
A federal grand jury in January indicted Richard J. Burke and
his wife, Nancy, for bank fraud and falsifying records. Nancy
Burke`s case has been set for July 19.
Richard Burke pleaded guilty to depositing some checks made out
to Shackelford Funeral Home into the couple`s personal account
between 1998 and January 2003.
Richard Burke, who also worked as the Nevada County coroner and
a pastor, faces up to 20 years in prison for the mail fraud counts
and up to 30 years for the bank fraud counts. US District Judge
Harry Barnes says he will issue the sentence in about six weeks.
An investigation began after the mortuary`s owners contacted the
FBI.
