President Obama is due to unveil new fuel standards today for all model years 2017-2025 cars and light-duty trucks.

The current fleetwide requirements will double to 54-and-a-half miles a gallon.

However, Detroit's Big Three automakers will be given some elbow room to continue building profitable SUVs and pickup trucks.

The White House says the result will be cost savings for consumers at the pump and a reduction in oil consumption and pollution.
