Hot Springs Thermal Water Rates To Go Up

Updated: January 7, 2009
The manager of Hot Springs` most famous hotel -- the twin-towered Arlington Hotel -- vows to fight against a sudden ten-time increase in fees for using the Spa City`s naturally thermal spring water. A letter from Hot Springs National Park Superintendent Josie Fernandez said the price for a thousand gallons of the water would go from 25 cents to Two-dollars-70-cents starting September First. The letters went to five businesses that use the water for spas. Horst Fischer, the general manager of the Arlington, said the park benefits from the hotels promoting the use of the water. He vowed that Fernandez will -- quote -- "have a fight on her hands." The rates for using the water haven`t changed since 1948, and Fernandez says the new rates are based on a study begun in 2000. She said the park is losing money now by providing such cheap water to the Arlington and four others -- the Majestic Resort Hotel and Spa, the Downtowner Hotel and Spa, the Austin Hotel and Convention Center, and Levi Hospital.
