The Hot Springs Lakeside School District`s former superintendent is pleading not guilty to a charge of theft by deception. 52-year-old Danny Slay of Hot Springs entered the plea in Garland County Circuit Court. He surrendered to police June 16th to face the charge, and was released on a ten-thousand dollar bond. The charges came after legislative auditors checked the district`s books in June 2003 and found almost 55-thousand dollars in undocumented expenditures, some for parties and gifts. The audit noted that Slay repaid about 33-thousand dollars. Auditor Leonard Davidson said Slay "admitted he used school funds to make numerous purchases that were for his personal use." No trial date has been set. Slay resigned as superintendent last September.
