Arkansas Won`t Get Record Wheat Crop This Year

A wheat specialist for the Extension Service says heavier rains have likely ruined the chance for a record wheat crop in Arkansas this year. The pre-harvest outlook was strong, but flooding has reduced total acreage by about 30 percent. Jason Kelly of the Extension Service says the agency estimated close to record yields for the state`s wheat crop until it started raining heavily. In fact, the acreage this year will likely be a third less than the ten-year average. Still, the yield will be greater than the total acres planted last year. Flooding also hurt the yield for that crop. Wheat is selling for around Three dollars and 35 cents per bushell -- a lower price that Kelly said should take some of the sting out of the lower yields.
