A Newport man was sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder for the stabbing death of his stepfather. 40-year-old Michael Myers was found guilty yesterday in the October slaying of 66-year-old Gene West. Myers` mother, Peggy West, testified against her son, saying she and her husband began trying to kick Myers out of the house two to three weeks before the killing. Forensic investigators testified that Gene West was stabbed four times with two knives. In a taped interview with Newport police, Myers said he acted in self defense. But he also said he`d been drinking and taking tranquilizers.
