The four-year-old son of state Representative Eric Harris of Lowell has a new kidney, and it came from his dad.
Harris underwent surgery June first at the Cincinnati Children`s Hospital to donate his left kidney to his son, Jackson.
The boy has now left the hospital`s intensive care unit and is in a private room at the hospital.
Harris` business partner says the father has already been discharged from the hospital, but is still recuperating at a nearby motel.
Prior to birth, Jackson Harris was diagnosed with a condition that impaired the function of both kidneys. After testing in February, doctors recommended a transplant be scheduled to avoid dialysis.
Mendenhall says the prognosis is good for both father and son.
