Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said in
Little Rock today that the Bush administration plans to start
initiatives to curb infestations of the Southern pine beetle and
red oak borer in the Ozark and St. Francis national forests
She told people assembled for a national conference on Bush`s
Healthy Forests initiatives that the pests have affected
340-thousand acres in the forests over the past few years.
Governor Huckabee, who also spoke at the conference, said taking
no action against the pests would do more harm to the environment
than burning and logging.
The national Sierra Club has taken issue with Bush`s proposals
and is planning a news conference today to argue its side.
