Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville is packed with Wal-Mart employees and shareholders for the company`s annual meeting. In the early portion of the meeting, executives of the world`s largest retailer talked up the contribution Wal-Mart makes to the economy and the communities in which it has stores. The Bentonville-based company says that after chief executive Lee Scott`s speech, the company will announce new initiatives for workers. A company official says compensation will be a small part of a much larger package dealing with employees. Wal-Mart has been a focus of accusations that it does not treat employees fairly. Wal-Mart critics claim in lawsuits that the company makes employees work unpaid overtime and engages in gender bias. Before Wal-Mart board chairman Rob Walton began the business portion of the meeting, he introduced various family members. Helen Walton, widow of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, did not make her customary appearance at the meeting. Rob Walton said his 84-year-old mother was resting in advance of a planned family gathering in the afternoon. ------ Wal-Mart had revenues last year of 256 (b) billion dollars. The company has one-point-five (m) million workers in the U-S and abroad. In the U-S, Wal-Mart has 35-hundred-78 discount stores, Supercenters, Sam`s Club warehouse stores and Neighborhood Market stand-alone grocery stores. Wal-Mart has 15-hundred-three international stores.
